Throughout our lives, we are bombarded with information of many different kinds. Whether found on the computer, seen through television, heard on the radio, read in a book, or told to us by another person, we are inundated with more claims, ideas, and arguments than can be counted. How does one decide what claims are true, what ideas make sense, or what arguments are convincing though? One way to rationally sort through things that we are skeptical of is by using critical thinking. By thinking through the logic behind an argument or the truth of a claim or premise, it is possible to help choose what claims, ideas, or arguments to accept. Thus, I believe that critical thinking is an important skill to learn, that it can be applied in many different situations, and that it has helped me overcome many challenges both in and out of school; I also believe my way of thinking resembles that of Rene Descartes.
But what exactly is critical thinking? To me, critical thinking is a process of thinking about things in a way that maximizes objectivity and minimizes bias as much as humanly possible. An important part of critical thinking is to doubt claims or arguments that have not been shown to be sound. This is particularly important when the emotional appeal of the argument or claim is strong; both good and bad ideas can be emotionally appealing, so being able to avoid accepting them before thinking through the logic behind them first can be difficult, but it is vital in order to avoid making an uninformed choice. More important, however, is the actual process of carefully thinking a claim through before deciding whether to accept it or not. First, the logic behind the claim needs to be examined for validity. ...nking is an important skill that can help one in many different places in life. Applying critical thinking can help one make decisions in a more rational manner and avoid allowing one’s emotions to adversely interfere with decision making. Some of the places where this comes up is when making impactful decisions and when one must make an informed judgment about a claim that needs evaluating. I have used critical thinking myself for both the important choice to pursue a degree in engineering and to make a rational decision when faced with an acquaintance’s overly optimistic hopes for a business venture of his. Finally, I believe that I have a similar thought process to that of Rene Descartes. Through the use of critical thinking, the barrage of information in life can be sorted through more effectively and the stress from information overload managed more efficiently.

Critical Thinking vs Making Assumptions Essay

- Critical thinking takes consistent behavior in asking the right questions about the subject. In my life, I have come across people who ask many questions and some people who “go with the flow” and believe everything they hear because it is spoken with some sort of authority. Assumptions can be damaging to relationships and without critical thinking and communication, our thought process can assume the wrong idea entirely. When I speak with someone who is a critical thinker, they can be so convincing that it is often challenging to decide what the correct conclusions are....   [tags: Critical Thinking Essays]

The Opinion And Persuasive Essay

- Consider the opinion and persuasive essays students are instructed to write. Using arguments and (hopefully) facts, students must explain their perspective, and then argue theirs is the correct side and all others are erroneous. They are to defend their opinion from attacks and to rip apart other viewpoints. Also are current event reports. In these, the teacher has her pupils research the news or some current event (as the name helpfully describes) and share their findings with the class. Under certain teachers, not only are the students to do this, but they are to add a twist by giving their perspective....   [tags: Critical thinking, Reasoning, Epistemology]
