When it comes to nursing school and nursing as a career, clinical reasoning and critical thinking go hand in hand. The APA states that critical thinking is defined as, “purposeful, self-regulatory judgment that uses cognitive tools such as interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, or contextual considerations on which judgment is based”(as cited in Clinical Reasoning, Decision making, and Action: Thinking Critically and Clinically, Benner,Hughes,Sutphen, 2008). Also stated by the APA, clinical reasoning is defined as, “a situated, practice-based form of reasoning that requires a background of scientific and technological research-based knowledge about general cases, more so than any particular instance. It also requires practical ability to discern the relevance of the evidence behind general scientific and technical knowledge and how it applies to a particular patient” (as cited in Clinical Reasoning, Decision making, and Action: Thinking Critically and Clinically, Benner, 2008,). These skills are very important to have when it comes to nursing. As a nurse I will face many different situations and patients. Using critical thinking and clinical reasoning will contribute to my care that I give for these patients by helping me prioritize my care, completing complicated tasks at hand, and increasing my happiness at my work place.

In school I have learned about what level of care is required for certain things such as a low oxygen saturat...

...more time to spend with my patients and actually get to know them and listen to them, which can be very rewarding. I’m sure at times I will feel rushed and overwhelmed but critically thinking will lower the amount of times I have these feelings. I will be able to go home at the end of the day knowing that I tried to do everything that I could to help my patients achieve the best possible outcomes that were planned for them.
So once I start working as a nurse I know that through practicing clinical reasoning and critical thinking I will be the best possible nurse because I will continue to improve on my prioritization of care, working on my completion of complicated tasks, as well as being able to enjoy my job as nurse. I plan on using critical thinking and clinical reasoning because I would like to obtain all of these outcomes once I become a Registered Nurse.
